Olive Branch, Miss. (November 26, 2012) – Kristen Shackleford, a senior at Olive Branch High School, has been named a C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars Award winner.
Shackleford is one of six students in the Greater Memphis area who received this week’s award for social sciences and history. C Spire Wireless will recognize more than 160 students during the 2012-2013 school year. Shackleford and other weekly winners will be honored at a luncheon at the Hilton Memphis, Thursday, May 2, 2013.
Shackleford is an excellent student who balances a rigorous course load with many extracurricular activities. She holds a 4.29 weighted grade point average and scored 27 on the ACT. Shackleford is an avid history enthusiast and plans to pursue a career in international relations and affairs. She participates in Youth in Government, is a two-year member of the Superintendent’s Youth Leadership Council and is the drum major for the marching band.
Academically, Shackleford has taken Advanced Placement classes in World History, U.S. History, U.S. Government, English and Calculus. She is president of the National Honor Society, president of Generation Free, a club against tobacco use, and a member of the executive board of the Photography Club. Shackleford also is active with the Interact Club, Foreign Language Club and Conquistadors for Christ and is a dedicated community volunteer, donating more than 200 hours, including many through St. Francis Hospital. She also packaged food for Haiti victims and worked with Habitat for Humanity.
The C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars program was conceived to identify and recognize high school students for excellence in academics, school leadership and community service. Now in its 7th year, the C Spire Academic All-Stars Awards are presented weekly for 28 weeks during the academic year from nominations submitted by school administrators.
Judges include educators from Rhodes College, The University of Memphis, LeMoyne-Owen College and Christian Brothers University. Each Sunday during the year, C Spire Academic All-Stars are announced in The Commercial Appeal.
